Tutor


Purpose: The Reading Tutor helps underserved elementary school children improve literacy skills.

Location: At one of Read and Feed’s sites in Wake County, either mobile classroom or facility-based.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Makes a 1-2-hour, weekly commitment for the school year (or summer) in order to maintain consistency with the students
  • Assists with meal service as needed
  • Engages students in conversation during meal
  • Works with student(s) to improve literacy skills using Read and Feed curriculum
  • Assists students with choosing take-home books appropriate for reading level
  • Assists students with redeeming books bucks for incentives
  • Records weekly progress notes
  • Reports any issues of concern to Team Lead and/or Read and Feed Program and Evaluation Director

Reports to:

  • Program and Evaluation Director

Time Commitment:

  • 1-2 hours/week, Mon – Thurs evenings, during the school year (approximately 24 weeks) or 9 weeks during summer months

Qualifications:

  • Enjoys spending time with young children
  • Able to read

Age Requirement:

  • 18 years of age or older
  • 15-17 years of age may volunteer with parent or guardian as a team

Requirements:

  • Clear criminal and sex offender background check
  • May require some lifting of book & curriculum boxes
  • Attend a training/orientation session
  • Adherence to Volunteer Code of Conduct
  • Reliable transportation
