Volunteer Coordinator
Mission: To strengthen literacy skills among under-served elementary school children, and provide meals in a nurturing neighborhood environment
Position Summary:
Under the direct supervision of the Executive Director, the Volunteer Coordinator will be responsible for managing the recruitment, training, retention and recognition of over 800+ active program, office, and
mobile classroom volunteers. This is a full time exempt, in-office position.
Key Job Responsibilities:
- Recruit, train, and drive retention of over 800 volunteers.
- Hold an average of 2-3 volunteer orientations per month throughout Wake County.
- Create and maintain volunteer rosters at all program sites, assigning volunteers to sites/tasks.
- Ensure volunteers are aware of their assigned schedule and communicate any schedule changes.
- Communicate with volunteers regularly to ensure consistent information circulates across program sites.
- Conduct occasional program site visits to understand operations and support volunteers.
- Update, administer, review, and as needed, re-design volunteer recruitment and application process.
- Plan and organize volunteer celebrations and activities.
- Develop and maintain a strategy for recruiting and retaining volunteers in areas of high need.
- Liaise with local organizations that provide volunteers.
- Represent Read and Feed at community events where volunteer recruitment is a main objective.
- Monitor and, where needed, develop additional volunteer policies.
- Work closely with the Program and Evaluation Director to identify and respond to programmatic needs and opportunities; occasionally be on call during program hours
- Collaborate with groups (high schools, companies, other organizations) to organize service days, such as book sorting, on an as needed basis
- Stay current on the literature and best practices related to volunteer management.
- Oversee ordering and inventory of prizes and mobile classroom/site supplies.
- Coordinate with groups and/or individuals interested in holding book and school supply drives
- Coordinate occasional mobile classroom visits to donor sites
Office management duties including:
- Oversee office hours daily by being in office, answering inquiries over phone, email, office supplies and drop ins
- Maintain organization of donation and book sorting room for volunteers
- Plan and receive donation drop-offs at the Read and Feed office
- Check mailbox and voicemail and set out of office voicemail during holidays when office is closed
- Work with accountant to complete some recurring payments/bills
- Manage the Read and Feed info@raf.org email address
Preferred Qualifications:
- BA, BS or Associate degree in business, human resources management, social work or related field preferred.
- Minimum of 2-3 years’ experience in volunteer programs and use of volunteer management systems, Galaxy.
- Fluency in Spanish is a plus.
- Knowledge of Salesforce or other CRM.
- Knowledge of Microsoft and Google Suite.
- Must be a self-starter and possess the ability to work well under pressure.
- Demonstrated problem solving skills and strong attention to detail.
- Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to maintain tact, diplomacy, and confidentiality.
- Strong multi-tasking, planning and organizational skills. Coordinate multiple priorities.
- Work as part of a team to reach shared goals.
- Ability to positively lead and direct the work of others.
