Triangle Aphasia Project Unlimited
Tell us a little about TAP Unlimited.
Triangle Aphasia Project, Unlimited is a nonprofit organization with a mission to serve individuals with aphasia, their family/friends and the community. Aphasia is a communication disorder resulting from stroke, or other brain injury. Aphasia results in challenges in accessing language in order to communicate, but doesn’t affect intelligence or memory. Aphasia can be extremely isolating and impact an individual’s ability to return to the roles and social/vocational pursuits.
Why did you want to team up with Read and Feed for the Aphasia Connects project?
There are so many reasons why this collaboration makes sense to me. First and foremost, TAP and R&F share altruistic vision, with programs to support, educate and connect individuals for purposeful engagement in their world. We both value the communicative confidence that comes from reading, social conversation and connections with peers. Those in the nonprofit world believe in the power of collaborative efforts and the premise that together we are better, stronger and more sustainable.
As if that wasn’t enough, TAP sees R&F as a leader in organized, directed educational support of reading and academic skills, as well as the ability to address hunger in our community. TAP clients also struggle with language based tasks, including reading, writing and speech. These language impairments makes it hard to perceive a future where they can return to the passions and purposes in their lives. TAP’s philosophy is one of a Life Participation Approach to Aphasia; hoping to provide communicative bridges to the community. Aphasia Connects has offered an individual with aphasia an opportunity to be the volunteer again…cherish a role where they can help someone else.
