Rita’s Italian Ice & Frozen Custard Cary Presents Generous Donation to Read and Feed
Rita’s Italian Ice & Frozen Custard presented a check for $1,000 to Read and Feed on May 9th! Rita’s Italian Ice, which became popular in the Triangle as a stand at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park, has opened a store on Harrison Avenue in Cary and plans to open 4 more in the Raleigh area.
Founded outside of Philadelphia in 1984, community involvement and sponsorship has always been integral to Rita’s mission. They show their dedication to their communities by hosting fundraisers and helping schools, sports teams and organizations across the country. “It’s just another way we deliver on our brand promise of Happiness”, they say on their website.
Jill Brega, the owner of the Wake County franchises, has already shown her commitment to our community since opening her first Rita’s earlier this spring. As a former teacher, Brega understands the Read and Feed mission of supporting literacy around Wake County. Read and Feed participated in the grand opening of Rita’s Italian Ice on April 6, promoting our mission with a booth.
The $1,000 donation from Rita’s Cary will benefit Read and Feeds programs, helping to expand our impact in Wake County. Through this partnership, Rita’s is helping Read and Feed support our literacy tutoring program and provide meals in high-need areas around Wake County.

Founded in 2007, Read and Feed aims to bridge the reading gap by providing children with the resources they need to learn in a safe, welcoming and fun environment. Working with Wake County Public School System, teachers and social workers, Read and Feed identifies children in grades K – 5 who struggle to reach reading benchmarks and live in underserved neighborhoods. With the support of our tremendous base of volunteers and donors in 2023, Read and Feed served over 1543 students with either tutoring or book provision at 24 program sites, provided 17,215 meals + healthy snacks, and distributed 24,000+ books.
