Read and Feed began more than a decade ago when founder Jan Frantz realized as she volunteered at Northwoods Elementary School that not every child had the resources they needed to improve their reading and writing skills.

So she quit her corporate job, bought an RV, converted it into a mobile classroom and launched Read and Feed. The nonprofit travels to neighborhoods of children in need in Wake County with food, books and tutors to ensure their bodies and minds are nourished.

To do its work, Read and Feed partners with Wake County schools to identify kids who aren’t reading on grade level and then brings after-school tutors to their neighborhood. After eating a meal, they spend about 30 to 40 minutes with a tutor to work on their reading skills. At the end of each session, they take home three books to build their own library at home. According to Read and Feed, 78 percent of kids who participated last semester reported being more confident about their reading skills.
