We provide as many low-income families as possible with the most basic of resources: food, books and tutoring assistance in a warm, nurturing environment in their own neighborhoods.
Read and Feed works in partnership with Wake County schools, which select students and neighborhoods that would benefit from the traveling classrooms and provide data on the students’ improvement in reading and overall school performance.
We’ve trained and now have deployed more than 425 active tutors. We serve in excess of 13,000 meals annually and have given children tens of thousands of books to keep as their own. Each week we spend a little over an hour with each child encouraging, mentoring and helping them learn to read and comprehend, serving 650+ children in 26 sites, four days per week during the school year and two days per week in the summer. Our tutors, working on a 2:1 child to tutor ratio, focus on improving literacy skills, building self esteem in the children and creating lasting confidence so that they have every opportunity to succeed.
